Living part time in the Dominican Republic has given me an opportunity to witness dehumanizing measures lobbied against Haitian migrants who live and work in the Dominican Republic. Increased migration from Haiti has resulted in an increase in tensions between the two nations that share a border. Dominican crackdown on immigration and arbitrary arrests have contributed to discriminatory practices very similar to what we are experiencing in the United States. The Haitian migrants live in constant fear of deportation. In 2013 the Dominican Supreme Court stripped away the citizenship of people born to undocumented workers.
When I look at the global issues of human rights and how immigration policy is divisive and politicized, I am disheartened.
